The day after school was released, we waisted no time launching into summer vacation and departed for Jacob Lake, AZ. We were going to meet Grandpa and Grandma Hamilton, Aunt Sarah and cousin Violet. We new the temperatures were going to be cold, especially since Jacob Lake is 8,000 ft and it was still May. We found our campsite underneath the Ponderosa Pine forest and settled in.
That night, our faith in camping was tested. It was so cold. Luckily, I had really warm pajamas and a snuggle suit for Willow (plus her winter cap; which was key to staying warm) and Ava and Isaac had long johns on plus additional layers and their winter hats. I kept waking up all night to make sure Willow's face was under the covers with mine; our breath kept our faces toastier. Bryan ended up climbing into a sleeping bag with Isaac to help keep him warm. Even though he didn't say he was cold, we could hear him rustling around in his bag. Later, Ava jumped into my bag with Willow and I. Sarah and Violet managed to snuggle together and stay warm through the night with layers of blankets. Grandma and Grandpa I don't think were to thrilled that first night but they powered through.
When we woke up, there was frost on our tent; it definitely froze that first night. It was a rough night for all of us, except Willow, but we survived. Thankfully, the sun would come out and thaw us out. But, what really helped keep us warm was the fire that Grandpa started up :)
The second night camping was much more enjoyable. It didn't get near as cold; which means we didn't have to retreat to our tents as early. We enjoyed food, smores, and good company.........
I enjoyed seeing those shining, smiling, faces in the glow of the firelight :)
It was nice to be reunited with family, especially near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
