Mount Moriah

When we got to Mount Moriah, we walked up a trail and through an icy wash to see some pictographs. It had been about a year and a half since I'd been up there. It was so neat to see the creek frozen white. This was the first time I'd been there in the winter season. But, it sure didn't feel like December on this day...............

Good thing Bryan paved the way first...... lol
He fell through the ice which had a large hollow gap inside.............
We treaded carefully over the slippery ice and made it to the archeological site

Here are some pictographs I've never photographed before...................

After returning to our vehicle, we drove up another canyon where there were some cool ice formations on the limestone cliffs.

We came upon a heard of curious deer................

Then, a minor setback on the tail end of our adventure - a flat tire.
Good thing it was still light outside :)
I tried to pay attention to where we store the equipment in case this happens when Bryan isn't around ("knock on wood" ~ hope that never happens) ;)

The deer actually stopped and watched our activity from a small distance...............

I think the flat tire ended up working to our advantage. Driving back to the main road toward home, Ben spotted another Great Basin ungulate peering at us on a rocky slope. A bighorn sheep. What a treat! Bryan was hoping to see them on this trip; we all were.

It started wandering in our direction.................

A second bighorn joined in. We watched them for about 10 minutes before they disappeared on the other side........

A beautiful ending to a beautiful day.......................

Knoll Springs

After leaving the salt flat we took a little pit stop at Knoll Springs. I wasn't too thrilled to see the cows there; knowing that we'd have to avoid stepping into cow pies. I was curious to see how the goldfish were doing in the troughs.

There weren't as many fish in this spring as I've seen in the past. But, I'm sure their numbers increase in the summer months. They were all pretty small too. I wished I had photos of this place taken in the 1990's to compare with today. I remember the fish being much larger back in Elementary School, and definately stronger in numbers.

The water flows from the trough into an adjacent pond, which was still frozen.

After that short visit, we headed over to our next destination: Mount Moriah.

Carpe diem!

The temperatures starting out this New Year are insane. There is no snow on the ground and it's in the 60's today. Last week it was warm too - so we took full advantage. While Grandpa & Grandma were in town, we decided to take a little drive around Snake Valley. The first stop was the large salt flat. What a grand day to play on the playa! After that, we went to Knoll Springs and the Mount Moriah area (I'll save that for another post).

We weren't the only ones out and about that day:

We drove down a little further to have a picnic at the Sink Hole............

Grandma was recording the moments and experimenting with her new camera too :)

Isaac didn't want to hike down to the bottom with Ava & daddy ~ so he perched himself on a rock and observed; content with his chip in hand.......
